Understanding Outdoor Smells Around Your Home

An outdoor odor is usually a sign that animals are living, feeding, or marking close to the house, or that something has died in the open or under cover. Because the source is outside, the smell tends to shift with the wind and the time of day, but where it's strongest still points you toward the cause.

Outdoor Odors by Location

• Fence line. Animals travel and mark along fences and tree lines; a strong smell here often means a trail or a den nearby.
• Porch or deck. The low, enclosed space underneath is prime denning habitat; a skunk smell here usually means a resident animal: see skunk smell.
• Backyard. A drifting decay smell can mean a dead animal under landscaping or in the open.
• Near garbage. Unsecured bins are the single biggest pest attractant, producing both their own odor and the smell of the animals they draw.
• Near bushes and landscaping. Dense cover shelters nests and sometimes raccoon latrines, concentrated droppings sites with a strong, distinctive smell.

Wildlife vs. Decomposition vs. Drainage

Sort the cause before treating it. A musky animal smell that comes and goes points to live wildlife marking and traveling. A steady, sickly-sweet smell points to something dead. A swampy, sulfur-tinged smell that's worst after rain is more likely stormwater drainage than a pest at all. Skunk digging paired with a damaged lawn is a special case: grub damage draws skunks in to forage, so the odor and the lawn damage share a root cause.
